C’mon Hollywood: Sequels A-Plenty

Sequels, Prequels, and Reboots.  Add that to comic book and 80′s/90′s toy adaptations and that’s about 90% of the box office for 2012 – forever.  There’s one thing they all have in common – the original made enough money for movie studios to go back to pasture and milk that cash cow dry.

300: Battle of Artemisia, a prequel to 2007′s 300 is on it’s way and is scheduled for a 2013 release.  This story will focus on Xerxes aka the bad guy from the first 300.  The original grossed over $450M worldwide, $210M in the US.  Based on the original’s performance, 300: BoA SHOULD kill it at the box office.  Frank Miller (author of the original comic book series) will return to write the screenplay, and Zack Snyder (original director) will return as producer.  None of the original cast will return, but that shouldn’t matter as there was no big name actors in the original.  Subsequently, the vast majority of the cast went on much bigger things shortly after this movies as released:

  • Gerard Butler made a ton of crappy romantic comedies
  • Michael Fassbender is now the darling of the movie world
  • Dominic Cooper starred in both The Wire and The Hour
  • Lena Headey stars in HBO’s Game of Thrones

Gut Reaction: if this gets rated “R” it will make a ton of money.  Over the top violence and crazy cinematography mixed with scantily clad people always wins.

Smash Analysis: High Draft Pick

I Am Legend 2 is gaining steam.  So… I guess Will Smith didn’t die at the end of I Am Legend?  It’s still unclear as to if this is a prequel (which has been rumored for years) or a sequel (which would make no sense).  Either way, IAL made $585M at the box office, $256M in the US.  Will Smith has not yet confirmed that he will be involved with the project.

The source material for this movie comes from the book I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.  The book is the most original take on vampires that you’ll ever read – Twilight be damned.  Personally, I think it’s a shame that the original story is not being told, that’s not going to matter once this hits the multiplex – this should have no problem steamrolling whatever it’s up against.

Gut Reaction: If Will Smith is in this picture, it’ll KILL it.  If he’s not, it should go direct to DVD.

Smash Analysis: First Round Draft Pick

Valley Girl: The Musical.  That’s not a joke or a jab at Nicolas Cage.  It’s happening… for realsies.  Valley Girl: The Musical is headed our way like an astroid headed towards Bruce Willis.  One can only hope that Cage is somehow involved.  I don’t care how – I just need him in there.

Gut Reaction: The last musical to really dominate the box office was Chicago… and baby, this ain’t Chicago.

Smash Analysis: Mid to late Round Draft Pick
